NETWORK / METROPOLITAN STATION OF THE YEAR 

For those radio networks broadcasting nationwide in three or more markets, or hybrid network/local radio stations in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. Note a brand can be entered as a Network or Metropolitan hybrid but not both.

CATEGORY OBJECTIVE

  • To recognise excellence in radio broadcasting in New Zealand.
  • To encourage and enhance the overall quality of the New Zealand radio industry.
  • To reward radio networks and metropolitan hybrids for outstanding performances against stated objectives.

CATEGORY DESCRIPTION
This award is made to the network or metropolitan radio station that has shown evidence of outstanding performance over the period covered by the awards.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

AUDIO

  • Audio of a maximum duration of 10 minutes.
  • Music must be telescoped.

In addition, a 10 second audio clip from the entry showcasing the network must be submitted separately with the entry to be used on awards night.

A video can be submitted for this category, but a link must be provided. No uploads are accepted. Duration is to be no longer than 2 minutes. Edited highlights videos can be created for your radio award entry, but any filmed footage included in them must be from the original and not re-created.

JUDGING CRITERIA

A - 50 POINTS | BROADCAST OUTPUT
Audio evidence of the network or hybrid station's effectiveness with its target audience. This could include entertainment, information and education values, client effectiveness, community involvement, news and current affairs, personality strength, promotions and marketing.

B - 10 POINTS | DEMONSTRATION OF EFFECTIVENESS

  • Statement of objectives - a concise statement of what the network is trying to achieve and its target audience (minimum 20 year age span).

C - 20 POINTS | RATINGS TREND DATA
Click here to complete the ratings trend data template for this award. This MUST include the following;

  • Target audience data of the brand on which the broadcast is produced.
  • Each network or hybrid station must specify this prior to entries opening and all brand entries must comply with this. The span must be a minimum of 20 years and a maximum of 40 years and may be specified by gender if relevant.
  • The figures must be for Total NZ or the market the hybrid station broadcasts in.
  • All results must be in Cume & Share for the specified target.
  • All trend results must include all survey results from the calendar year of the awards.
  • Data for music entries must include the performance of the top 10 other stations in your demographic.
  • Total NZ RNZ database data for talk entries must include RNZ National, Newstalk ZB and any other stations in your demographic. Please note this database is not released publicly so the data is only to be used for judging this category and not for any other use.

D - BEST IN SHOW | PERFORMANCE IN OTHER CATEGORIES
All brands will receive one point per finalist and an additional point per winner in the following categories. If a number of brands are on one entry, points will be split evenly between the relevant brands:

  • Best Music Network Breakfast/Local Breakfast Show OR Best Talk Presenter Breakfast or Drive
  • Best Music Network/Local Music Host OR Best Talk Presenter Non-Breakfast or Drive
  • Best News or Sports Story Team Coverage OR Best Client Promotion/Activation
  • Best News or Sports Journalist OR Best Network/Single Market Station Promotion
  • Best Marketing Campaign OR Best Community Campaign
  • Best Digital Content
  • Best Content Director/Content Team

LOCAL STATION OF THE YEAR

For radio stations broadcasting in one or two markets. Local daily broadcast content must be minimum three hours Monday to Friday for shows that originate from, are produced in and are only broadcast in one or two markets. Only local promotions and on-air material can be entered.

  • To reward an individual local radio station for outstanding performances against stated objectives.

A - 30 POINTS | BROADCAST OUTPUT
Audio evidence of the radio station's effectiveness with its local target audience. This could include entertainment, information and education values, client effectiveness, community involvement, news and current affairs, personality strength, promotions and marketing.

B - 20 POINTS | DEMONSTRATION OF STATION EFFECTIVENESS

Statement of objectives - a concise statement of what the station is trying to achieve and its target audience (minimum 20 year age span).
 
C - 0-2 POINTS | LOCAL DAILY BROADCAST CONTENT
The following additional points will be awarded to total scores after judging:
Local daily broadcast content 12 hours or more - 2 points
Local daily broadcast content 6-12 hours - 1 point
Local daily broadcast content up to 6 hours - No points
